120 ECTS rule for BA student thesis abolished

The Faculty Board has decided to abolish the rule that BA students need to obtain all 120 ECTS of year 1 and 2, before they are allowed to start writing their BA thesis. Read below for more information.

This rule was introduced in the Education and Examination Regulation for the cohort who started their BA in 2015/16 and would become effective during the academic year 2017/18. The main reason for this rule was that students who miss a considerable portion of the 120 ECTS of their first two years of the programme, are not yet ready to start writing their thesis. Yet, in the meantime, the temporary fall/winter track has been abolished, which would make the introduction of the entrance requirements a severe punishment for students who only miss a small portion of the 120 ECTS from their first two years. The introduction of this rule would lead to a study delay of 1 year for students who miss but a few ECTS. Moreover, both programmes have made considerable progress in improving the quality of the preparation for thesis writing (including a revised (academic) skills track, a better structured thesis trajectory and extra writing support).

Therefore, the Faculty Board has decided that the 120 ECTS rule is no longer needed in the two BA programmes. Nevertheless, we strongly advise students who want to make a chance to complete their BA thesis successfully, to prepare themselves properly by passing all courses and skills of year 1 and year 2. Students with study delay in year 3 have to contact the student advisors to make a feasible planning for their graduation.
