SG lecture: binge-watching and moral awareness, on Monday 7 October

Studium Generale organizes a lecture on binge-watching and its effects on your moral awareness on Monday 7 October. Merel van Ommen, academic lecturer in communication science at Radboud University will argue in this lecture that maybe binge-watching isn’t that bad after all.

The lecture takes place at the Auditorium, Minderbroedersberg 4-6 at 20.00. Entrance is free.

Poetry Night: Poetry in Action, on Tuesday 8 October

Poetry is on the rise! It is increasingly finding its way as part of present-day manifestations of our modern culture. Youngsters nowadays reflect on societal issues through spoken word. Poetry slams, spoken word performances, rap songs and Instagram poetry. The days of the elderly poet reciting in a solemn voice are long gone.

On Tuesday 8 October a poetry night takes place in UCM’s Common Room, Zwingelput 4, at 20.00. Entrance is free.

Open Day Centre for the Social History of Limburg, on 12 October

You are all very welcome on the Open Day of the Centre for the Social History of Limburg (Dutch: Sociaal Historisch Centrum voor Limburg) on Saturday 12 October. Just drop in any time between 11.00 and 16.00 at our Centre, Sint Pieterstraat 7, not far from the University Library.

Conference on Recognition & Rewards, on Friday 15 November

There is a growing movement to review the recognition and rewards systems for academics in Europe, notably in the transition to Open Science. The European University Association (EUA) and the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) invite you to an international conference on this topic, on Friday 15 November. Studium Generale: China’s Social Credit System lecture, on 1 October

On Tuesday 1 October at 20.00, Rogier Creemers, Postdoctoral Scholar in the Law and Governance of China at Leiden University, will give a lecture on China’s Social Credit System (SCS). The lecture takes place at the Auditorium, Minderbroedersberg 4-6.

The SCS is perhaps the most prominent manifestation of the Chinese government’s intention to reinforce legal, regulatory and policy processes through the application of information technology.

Call to sign Scientists4Future NL statement on climate change

This is a call to the Netherlands-based scientists and scholars to sign the ‘Scientists4Future NL’ consensus statement in support of the climate strike on 27 September. Around 1,000 signatures have been collected so far.
