Call for Applications FASoS ‘Valorization’ prize

All staff members of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences are encouraged to apply for the ‘valorization’ prize. The prize will be awarded at the Research Heidag on 8 November 2018 to an individual or a group. Projects must demonstrate that they build on existing research at FASoS and that they have created demonstrable societal value. Please apply by 15 October.

Valorisatie or ‘valorization’ is a term used to describe the contribution which research adds to society, and the process of delivering this contribution. It covers many forms of societal engagement, such as appearances in the media, the discussion of research results with societal stakeholders, engaging in the public debate, providing consultancy services, or helping with the broader processes of discussion and self-reflection in society. Valorization can happen on different levels (local, regional, national and international), with diverse partners and communities, and in different formats (media presentations, workshops, stakeholder seminars, campaigns, web pages, etc.).

Valorization is increasingly valued in Dutch and European science policies, and has become a criterion for evaluating research proposals in some funding schemes. To further stimulate the reflection and actual practice of ‘valorization’, FASoS introduced a yearly ‘valorization’ prize in 2017. This prize will be awarded around the beginning of each academic year to an individual or a group. Projects must demonstrate that they build on existing research at FASoS and that they have created demonstrable societal value. The prize is not restricted to any specific form of ‘valorization’ activities; rather, it aims to celebrate and support the diversity of such activities at FASoS.

The prize is €2.000, which will go into the personal budget of the staff member (or members) receiving the award. The sum must be spent on further ‘valorization’ activities. On the basis of applications received, a prize committee will propose the winner(s) to the Faculty Board, which awards the prize. The selection committee will assess, inter alia, the originality and creativity of past and future valorization activities, the evidence of successful knowledge transfer and the societal impact of activities, and the way in which research and valorization activities are linked.

Who can apply?
All staff members of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences can apply. Teams can include persons from outside of FASoS (for instance societal partners) or students, but must comprise at least one FASoS staff member.

How to apply
Please use the application form and submit your application by 15 October 2018 to research-fasos@maastrichtuniversity.nl. Your application should describe how your research activities have been valorized in the past and how you plan to spend the prize money for further valorization.
