Thomas Frissen publishes article in Communication Methods and Measures
Thomas Frissen just co-published a research article and a new digital methods research toolkit for meme researchers in the journal Communication Methods and Measures (IF: 9.01).
Aiming to bridge the gap between technical disciplines and the social sciences/humanities, this study proposes an innovative, integrative avenue combining the robust pattern-recognition capacities of computers and the excellent interpretative qualities of humans.

Annet Schoot Uiterkamp has been featured in various media outlets to talk about PhD dissertation “Kolen en kampen. Tewerkstelling van politieke delinquenten in Nederlandse steenkolenmijnen, 1945 -1958”. [Coal and Camps: the employment of political delinquents in Dutch coal mines, 1945 – 1958] which she defended on 12 October.

UM students who are Autistic or have AD(H)D needed for focus group
Funded by the UM Diversity & Inclusivity Grant, the UM project team Embracing Neurodiversity aims to facilitate a better learning space for neurodivergent students.
However, neurodivergent students themselves know their needs best. As such, students who are Autistic and/or have AD(H)D are asked to join the focus groups sessions taking place in the second and fourth week of November!

Bart Zwegers appointed as new heritage curator
Bart Zwegers is Maastricht University’s new curator of the Arts and Heritage Commission. He succeeds Annemieke Klijn.
Bart: “It is my ambition to continue Annemieke Klijn’s fine work and organise special public activities in which art, heritage and the special collection of the university library come together in a unique way.”
Petition: protect students during the energy crisis
All low-income households are able to receive financial support during the energy crisis from the Dutch government- except students. A court case ruled that EU students should not be excluded, but the government has yet to roll out energy subsidies to students.
NovUM and Volt Maastricht started this petition to the Dutch government to act quickly and provide financial support to students struggling to pay their energy bills due to the energy prices.

The Student Project Team is currently running a short survey on how UM communicates with students.
Voice your opinion on the matter and help UM get a better understanding of the issue. The results of the survey will then be taken into consideration to improve communication with students.

BA Arts and Culture alumna involved in production documentary
BA Arts and Culture alumna Nadine Bemelmans was closely involved in the production of the documentary ‘A World to Shape’, directed by Ton van Zantvoort and produced by Elbe Stevens Films.
The documentary is about two Dutch designers, Dave Hakkens and Nienke Hoogvliet, who want to improve the world with their ideas about sustainability.
Lumière is screening the film on 17 October at 20.00, you can get tickets here.
VSBfonds scholarships for socially involved Dutch students
Are you socially engaged and would you like to study abroad after graduation?
The VSBfonds offers scholarships to socially engaged students who are graduating from a hogeschool or university and afterwards want to study abroad (not as part of a Dutch study programme).
Within the selection procedure, your motivation and social involvement are key. Scholarships range between €7,000 for one year and €10,000 for two years.
Students with the Dutch nationality can apply before 1 March 2023. For more information, visit the website.
Weg van Lawaai app (freely) available in Apple app store
The Weg van Lawaai app can be downloaded for free here. It offers audio stories about the history of noise from, in and around the car, using GPS. You hear the voice of Rik van de Westelaken.
The app was created under the supervision of Karin Bijsterveld by Maastricht University (text), Beeld en Geluid (historical audio fragments) and Q42 (app) and is co-financed by the ArchiScienza Foundation (Fund for Architecture and Science).
Continuation Maastricht Centre for the Innovation of Classical Music
Zuyd University, philharmonie zuidnederland and Maastricht University will continue their collaboration in the Maastricht Centre for the Innovation of Classical Music (MCICM) for the next four years.
Over the past four years, the three partners have already worked together in the MCICM. Financially supported by the Province of Limburg, the partners conducted research into innovations in classical music practice.
