Crowdsourcing project – Maastricht University: going the extra mile!

We invite UM students to challenge the creative half of their brain to come up with a concept to attract attention from a young public so that they are triggered to find out more information about Maastricht University.

Check the website for more information. We would like to receive your creative concept digitally at the latest on 30 November 2017 by 12.00 noon. If your proposal is selected you will be rewarded with an Apple iPad 2017 WiFi 32Gb.

Visionary Essay Competition on the Future of Data-driven Society

Maastricht University students and employees are invited to submit visionary essays concerning the future of modern data-driven society. Essays by students will be given priority. Please send your essay to info-ids@maastrichtuniversity.nl before Sunday 17 December 2017, 23.59 CEST. The winners will be announced during the pre-Dies Natalis event on 25 January 2018.

Data Science Research Competition

Maastricht University students and employees are invited to participate in a competition for innovative research proposals that aim at designing cutting-edge research using data science to tackle key problems of societal relevance. Please submit your proposal to info-ids@maastrichtuniversity.nl before Sunday 17 December 2017, 23.59 CEST. Proposals should be interdisciplinary and involve both students and staff members.

Erasmus Prize Essay Competition ‘Knowledge, Power & Diversity’

On the occasion of the award of the 2017 Erasmus Prize to sociologist Michèle Lamont, the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation is organising an essay competition on the theme ‘Knowledge, Power and Diversity’ for students. Students of social sciences are invited to connect the three themes, and may draw inspiration from Michèle Lamont. Send your submission via email by Wednesday 1 November. A jury will select three essays from those submitted.

Call for Papers: Sociolinguistics Circle 2018

The Sociolinguistics Circle is an annual one-day conference aiming to bring together students and researchers of language variation, sociolinguistics and social dynamics of language with a connection to the Low Countries. The upcoming, fifth edition will take place at Maastricht University, on Friday 6 April 2018. For this edition, we also invite BA and MA students to submit their work for (poster) presentation.

FASoS to host 5th Sociolinguistics Circle in April 2018

The first Sociolinguistics Circle was hosted by the University of Groningen in March 2014. The next edition will be hosted by the chair ‘Language culture in Limburg’ of Maastricht University at FASoS and will take place on Friday 6 April 2018. For this fifth edition, bachelor’s and master’s students are also invited to submit their work for (poster) presentations.

Leo Polak Thesis Prize 2017

Every year, the Foundation Leo Polak presents two prizes available for a master’s thesis. The themes for 2017 are: Populism, Digitalisation and meaning in life and “Completed life”. The prize is intended for students at a Dutch-speaking university or for Dutch-speaking Belgians and Dutchmen at a foreign university who have completed a master’s thesis in the academic year. Submission deadline: Sunday 1 October.

Essay competition on the most important scientific breakthrough

The KHMW (Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen) and the Dutch newspaper NRC announce their eighth essay competition. The theme of this year is ‘What will be the most important scientific breakthrough in the 21st century?’. Submit your essay before 15 June. More information can be found online.

Call for freelance writers and artists for Mosaïek magazine

Mosaïek magazine is calling for freelance writers and artists among our staff and students. Mosaiek is an independent, non-profit magazine, exclusively run by FASoS students, which encourages expression in relation to humanities and social sciences.
