Collaborative Project Workshop on ‘Trust in Trade’, on 22 January

On 22 January, from 09.00-17.30, a Collaborative Project workshop on Trust in Trade will be held at the Law Faculty of Maastricht University (Feestzaal). Participation is free of charge, but registration is required.

The workshop takes place in the context of the current rise of economic nationalism and unilateralism in trade, which signals an erosion of trust in international trade and the rules that govern it.

Trust in the international economic law regime is crucial for stakeholders (such as states, traders and civil society) to be willing to accept the risks inherent in international economic relations and engage collaboratively in the field of trade. This trust is under pressure, as is evident from Brexit and the Trump administrations’ unilateral trade policies. The erosion of trust creates challenges for law making, law reform, and the implementation and enforcement of law governing international economic relations.

This Collaborative Project workshop on “Trust in Trade” aims to elucidate the concept of ‘trust’ in the context of international economic law, by examining the theoretical framework for understanding trust in trade and exploring its application through various case studies. This analysis aims to contribute to understanding the reasons underlying the erosion of trust in trade and suggest ways to restore it.
