Debate at the castle: local identities and global issues, on 10 January

You are invited for an evening of debate and discussion about contemporary issues concerning local identity, integration, or simply what it takes to feel ‘at home’ in a world where globalisation challenges local identity. As well as larger topics concerning the geopolitics of the future.

Amongst the speakers and debaters will be René Gabriëls and Emile Roemer.

Thursday 10 January, 19.00 – 22.00, Kasteel Hoensbroek.

Register at f.van.tongeren@heerlen.nl.

The castle of Hoensbroek is currently hosting two exhibitions, one on the state history of Limburg – from the Dutch revolt in the sixteenth century till recent history – as well as a contemporary exhibition that questions visitors about their (‘Limburgian’) cultural identity. If there is one thing that the history of Limburg teaches us, it is that our borders and national identities are in a constant flux. From Hispanic, to Austrian, to French, Dutch, Belgian and Prussian, just to name a few of the political identities that the region you are currently working, studying and living in has known.

Inspired by this dynamic history, we would like to invite you for an evening of debate and discussion about contemporary issues concerning: local identity, integration, or simply what it takes to feel ‘at home’ in a world where globalisation challenges local identity. As well as larger topics concerning the geopolitics of the future: what is the meaning of borders and how will they change in the coming 50 or 100 years? What does the EU mean to us and how will it exist (or survive) in the next century? These and many more questions concerning the ‘local’ and the ‘global’ will be debated against a backdrop of spectacular scenery of the castle of Hoensbroek. And of course, we will have a drink together, to get to know each other’s background or perhaps just have a nice get together with friends after the Christmas holiday home far away from home.

Amongst the speakers and debaters will be the interim mayor of Heerlen and former politician in the Dutch parliament Emile Roemer, professor René Gabriëls from the faculty of social sciences, Nour Khatib student European Studies from Syria and many more. Of course, the audience will have the opportunity to participate in the debates and ask questions.
