“Green Wave”, “Populist Surge”, “Timmermans Effect” – the media has already identified a number of noteworthy aspects of the 2019 elections to the European Parliament. This roundtable of academic experts will take a considered view on developments before and after the elections in May 2019, looking at issues such as the impact of the Spitzenkandidaten system and their pan-European campaigns, including the Maastricht Debate, the reasons for the rise in voter turn-out, the possible consequences of the high turnover among MEPs and the prospects for coalition formation in a more fragmented European Parliament.

Last but not least, we will debate, on the eve of the European Council meeting scheduled to make these decisions, the nature of the choices that will be made when it comes to the election of the next President of the European Commission and the other leadership appointments in the European Union that will need to be filled this year.
