Divestment vs. engagement: fossil fuel industry debate, on 17 February

Together with UM’s pension fund ABP, Fossil Free Maastricht and professor Rob Bauer (SBE), Sustainable UM2030 is organising a debate about the question whether ABP should divest or engage with fossil fuel companies. Join in on the debate!

When: Monday 17 February, 19.30 – 21.30
Where: Aula, Minderbroedersberg 4-6

ABP pension fund – the pension fund of all civil servants and educational staff in the Netherlands – currently invests €16,5 billion in the fossil fuel industry. This includes 12 of the 20 biggest polluters who are responsible, together, for a third of all CO2 emissions.

For over a year, Fossil Free Maastricht has been campaigning for ABP to divest (stop investing) in the fossil fuel industry, and for UM to make a public statement calling on ABP to do this. In May 2019, Fossil Free Maastricht delivered a petition to the University of approx 1,000 signatures calling on UM to take a stand.

As a result, UM has agreed to host a public debate among Fossil Free Maastricht (represented by Sally Thin), UM (Nick Bos, Vice President) and ABP (Corien Wortmann, Chairperson). This is the chance for staff and students to better understand the issues involved, and for Fossil Free Maastricht to present the case for divestment to ABP, UM, and everyone who attends.

We are in the grips of a climate emergency of unprecedented proportions. Now is not the time to stay silent on this issue. Join the debate: learn, ask questions, and make your voice heard.
