EDLunch: Problems with the problem, on 28 May

Join the EDLunch ‘Problems with the problem: A reflection on ‘problems’ in PBL task design for the humanities’ presented by Sven Schaepkens.

This session for UM teaching staff takes place at EDLAB, TAPX (Building X, Sint Hubertuslaan), room 0.16 and includes lunch. The session is in English. The presentation with questions usually lasts from 12.00 – 13.00 and for those interested in discussing or networking for longer there will be time until 13.30.

Students do not always execute a proper pre-discussion that evokes self-study motivation and mobilizes pre-knowledge. Students handle tasks as if they were little puzzles wherein keywords are hidden by the course designer to be discovered. During the pre-discussion, students merely list those keywords on the board, but once that is done, the brainstorm does not take off. Sven argues that carefully designing problems is the solution.
