Essay competition ‘The EU as Security Provider’

The JASON Institute (Stichting JASON), Netherlands Atlantic Youth (Jonge Atlantici) and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs are holding an essay competition on ‘The EU as Security Provider: Towards a Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy’. All relevant information, including terms and conditions, can be found on the dedicated Facebook page or the organisers’ websites.

As you know, the Netherlands holds the EU Presidency in the first half of 2016. At the same time, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini is working on a Strategic Review of the EU Security Strategy that dates from 2003. This essay competition can be seen in that context. We ask students and young professionals to give their policy recommendations for the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy in the short- to medium-term future.

By submitting a 500-1500 words Policy Recommendation, the participants can win several prizes. The writers of the 25 best policy recommendations will be invited for a day at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where they have the chance to discuss their essays with senior policy advisors and each other. On that day, the top 10 and the winner will be selected. The top 10 essays will be bundled and submitted to Ms. Mogherini. The winner will also be invited to spend a day at the Dutch Permanent Representation to the European Union (all expenses paid). Furthermore, the wining essay will be published in “JASON Magazine” (published by JASON Institute) and the magazine “Atlantisch Perspectief”(published by the Netherlands Atlantic Association).
