Exposition Law History in Honour of Louis Berkvens

On 15 June 2018 prof. Dr. Louis Berkvens will say goodbye to Maastricht University (UM) after 20 years of endowed professorship. In honor of his leave an exposition about law history and its development will be opened 11 June at UM’s administrative offices. The exposition holds works from the UM Library’s Special Collections, Centre Céramique and the Regional Historical Centre Maastricht (RHCL).

Involvement in heritage
In his farewell speech ‘Het leenrecht vergadert. Limburgse rechtsgeschiedenis in Euregionaal perspectief’ Berkvens refers to his endowed professorship with a specialization in the law of Limburg. Moreover, Berkvens also speaks about his involvement with the Limburgs Geschied- en Oudheidkundig Genootschap.

Law history visualized
For a professor of law history who is interested in early modern regional law, the Special Collections of the aforementioned institutions have much to offer. The works on display are about law history, but will also show the connection between historical and contemporary jurisdiction.

There are primary and regional sources on display, such as Observationes and commentaries, amongst which there are also several rather well-known works. Examples are the Sachsenspiegel (1554), written by the Saxon knight Eike von Repgow, and the Observationes (1741), written by the famous lawyer Charles de Méan from Liège. Furthermore, there are old and new collections of law texts and several recent works written by Berkvens himself that are to be seen during the exposition. Because Berkvens took care of the digitalisation of many placards from the UM Library Special Collections, these sources also have a place in the exposition.

Adopt-a-Book
The Recueil der Recessen, printed in 1719 by the Maastricht printer Lambertus Bertus, has a special place in the collection. This book is not only interesting for the history of law, but also for the history of Maastricht. Unfortunately, the book is in a bad condition and cannot be used for educational purposes now. Therefore, the UM Library would like to restore the book.

Would you like to help? Via the Adopt-a-Book programme you can choose to give financial support to restore this book or another book from the UM Library Special Collections.

Visiting the exposition?
From June 11 until 13 July 2018 the exposition is to be seen in in UM’s administrative offices, Minderbroedersberg 4-6, 6211 LK, Maastricht. So, take your chance and come over to admire these wonderful works! You are more than welcome to visit the exposition during the administrative office’s opening hours: Monday to Friday between 08.00 and 19.00.
