The Global War on Terror and Immigrant Organizational Agency: The Case of Pakistani Diaspora Organizations in London, Toronto and New York City.

Abstract
To what extent does the global regulatory environment associated with the U.S.-led War on Terror constrain the agency of Pakistani diaspora organisations facilitating immigrant incorporation and transnational engagement? Using the case of Pakistani diaspora organisations in London, Toronto and New York City, this lecture bridges the literatures on migrant organisations and organisation studies by comparatively analysing how the regulatory environment associated with the global “war on terror” affects the experiences, strategies and behaviours of Pakistani organisations in three different places of settlement: London, Toronto and NYC. Data come from 131 in-depth interviews and over 200 hours of participant observation. Findings reveal that Pakistani non-profits experience a similar global organisational stigma across these three different sociopolitical and organisational environments and that the high costs associated with stigma management ultimately constrain the abilities of Pakistani organisations to fulfill both their local and transnationally-oriented objectives and missions.
Ali R. Chaudhary is a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the International Migration Institute, at the University of Oxford, where he is working on a European Commission funded project-Transnational Migration, Citizenship and the Circulation of Rights and Responsibilities. He is a sociologist who uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate the political, economic, and socio-cultural consequences of international migration. His research interests lies at the intersection of international migration, political sociology, race & ethnicity and organization studies.
