In her thesis, Alina retraces the scientific controversy around the carcinogenic properties of deodorant. The case study highlights the mechanisms of boundary work, risk assessment and precautionary policies in the face of scientific uncertainty. She concludes by calling on scholars of STS to take a normative stance towards their own profession. Hereby, she explores her own dedication to advance the political impact of STS. She aims to contribute to the democratization of risk regulatiom by working for knowledge intense institutes such as the Dutch Scientific Council for Government Policy and sharing theoretical insights of the social construction of scientific knowledge.
FASoS student wins international ESST Award 2012

Alina Marktanner has won the ESST award 2012 for her thesis “Does deodorant cause breast cancer? Or: Why everyone should be an STS scholar”. She is the second Maastricht student to receive this award, which consists of a €1000 cash price. The 2012 ESST European Award for Aspiring Undergraduates in Science, Technology and Society (STS) is handed out by the European Inter-University Association on Society, Science and Technology. This European association also provides one of FASoS’s oldest Master’s programmes: ESST.
