#FASoSFoodies part 5: Emilia Mantadakis

Emilia Mantadakis is a 24-year-old bachelor’s student in Globalisation and Development at our faculty. Although born in the Netherlands, she has also lived in Crete and Athens. Her favourite dish? ‘Spanakopita!’ she replies enthusiastically. ‘Spanakopita is a typical Greek dish made of puff pastry with eggs, spinach and feta cheese. I make it a lot because it reminds me of Greece and of my childhood. But I can’t beat my mother at it!’

‘Mantadakis is a very common name in Crete; it’s like ‘Janssen’ in the Netherlands. I try to go back as often as I can. Next summer I will be visiting my family and friends.”

‘What I miss most about Greece is the weather. When I am there for a couple of weeks I feel better right away. Some people are just not made for certain climates like the Dutch climate.’

‘My grandfather and grandmother still live in Ilioupoli, Athens. They have a garden with a lot of herbs. If I am somewhere and smell basil, I am immediately back in my grandparent’s garden.’
