Film Series on Totalitarianism: ‘The Wave’, on 27 November

The next film to be screened in the Film series on Totalitarianism, organised by Aline Sierp, is ‘The Wave’ (Germany 2008) directed by Dennis Gansel. The film will be shown on Tuesday 27 November at 19.00 in the Turnzaal. Entry is free, tea and cookies will be provided. Join us for the screening and discussion afterwards!

It would be impossible to establish a dictatorship in modern Germany – that’s what Rainer Wenger’s history students believe when he teaches them about autocracy. To prove them wrong, Rainer starts a social experiment and establishes a dictatorship under the name ‘The Wave’ in his class. The Wave dramatically changes the social structures at the school, leading to social exclusion and radicalisation. Eventually, the experiment spirals out of control…

The film was nominated for German and European film awards and received praise for showing how totalitarianism and social exclusion can still arise, even today.

In the context of the European project EWORDS, Aline Sierp organises a series of six films that deal with various aspects of totalitarianism in different countries and under several regimes. The films will be shown in the Turnzaal at Fasos at 19.00 every Tuesday evening between 6 November and 11 December. Entry is free.

Before the screening of the film, a Fasos faculty member will give a short introduction to the topics and context of the film, and after the screening there will be time for discussion.
