When we think of post-war Germany, the process of “Vergangenheitsbewältigung” (coming to terms with the past) comes to our minds. Set in 1950s Germany, “The People vs Fritz Bauer” shows the true story of German-Jewish prosecutor Fritz Bauer shortly after his return from exile. His mission to prosecute Nazi officials involved in the systematic mass killings of European jews, is met with harsh criticism and resistance – barely any public examination of the Holocaust had occurred in Germany since the war. Working against still-existing Nazi structures, Bauer’s adversaries portrayed him as a jew pursuing his own personal vengeance, yet his efforts were much more about the future than the past. The trials were supposed to educate young Germans so that the atrocities committed by their ancestors were never to be repeated. The film received critical acclaim, and next to many nominations it received the Locarno and the German Film Prize.

In the context of the European project EWORDS, Aline Sierp organises a series of six films that deal with various aspects of totalitarianism in different countries and under several regimes. The films will be shown in the Turnzaal at Fasos at 19.00 every Tuesday evening between 6 November and 11 December. Entry is free.

Before the screening of the film, a FASoS faculty member will give a short introduction to the topics and context of the film, and after the screening there will be time for discussion.
