Spend your lunch break in a different way and experience a gem in the history of cartography: a ‘Mercator Hondius’ atlas from 1628, also known by its full name ‘Cosmographic Meditations on the Fabric of the World and the Figure of the Fabrick’d’. Visit the Parlour of the University Library on Thursday 10 and Friday 18 September between 12.00 and 14.00.
This atlas was given to the library on long-term loan by the church council of the St.Remigius parish of Simpelveld. This highlight in the history of engraving is now available for teaching and research. The atlas contains over 150 hand-coloured maps. Notable are the enormous amount of details and the realistic depiction of the known world.
To reach the Parlour, take the alleyway between the Grote Looiersstraat and Nieuwenhofstraat and enter the Library. Take the revolving door, go straight ahead past the reception desk and turn left. The Parlour is located next to the Information Desk.
