Harro van Lente speaker at World Conference of Science Journalists

The World Conference of Science Journalists brings together science journalists. It is organised for the 11th time and is now held in Lausanne, 1-5 July 2019.

Harro van Lente will bring his scholarly work on promises in science and technology to a session on Hope or Hype. The session is intended to help journalists avoid being taken in by “techno-hype”, especially when it comes to fixes for big development problems.

We live in an age of marvelous innovation, and are bombarded by the next big technological solution all the time. Do we buy into the hype too much? And how can journalists learn to assess these technological fixes?

The session is organised by Vaishnavi Chandrashekhar, The Times of India. Other speakers include David Rotman, editor of MIT Tech Review; UK journalist Anita Makri; and Sri Lankan journalist Nalaka Gunawardene.
