On 11 January 2017 Dr Heidi Maurer participated in a student-led roundtable discussion with over 60 master’s students at Radboud University in Nijmegen on the current state of the refugee crisis.
While local political office holders shared their insights into the state of affairs in accommodating and integrating refugees in and around Nijmegen, Dr Maurer contributed the political European perspective and was also able to share her insights in how European and national politics had been responding during the past 18 months.
The nuanced and critical questions put forward by students to the panelists confirmed the need to discuss current issues more often and in more depth, and the chosen format of allowing different perspectives from the local, national and European level provided a useful tool for a comprehensive and stimulating discussion.
