Internship at Centre Céramique/Natural History Museum Maastricht

Centre Céramique and the Natural History Museum in Maastricht are offering an internship to one or more students master or bachelor student from FASoS for a flexible period of two or three months. The internship will deal with the beautiful collection of herbals (or ‘kruidboeken’ in Dutch) in the institutes’ possession. For more information, contact Pieter Caljé.

Herbals or kruidboeken have played an important role in the cultural and scientific world in Europe in the early modern period (from the Renaissance until the early 19th century). They offer an often beautifully illustrated systematic description of the herbs and plants of Europe, their characteristics and medical possibilities, and were widely used by scientists, doctors and in monasteries. Centre Céramique and the Natural history Museum have a large number of those books in their collection. In this internship the student or students will have to go into the history of the herbals or kruidboeken first, and then analyse the collection of the Centre Céramique and Natural Historical Museum. Do the books give a good overview of the European tradition on this point? The internship will be concluded with a mini-exposition for which the student has to write the introduction and accompanying texts.

The period of the internship is flexible. It will cover a period of two or three months. It is possible to start already in August, but also in the fall. Students have to be able to read some Dutch, and preferably also some German or French. Any knowledge of Latin is helpful. It is open for any bachelor or master student from FASoS.
