Internship position at Jan van Eyck Library in Maastricht

The Jan van Eyck Art Library in Maastricht is offering an 8 or 16 hour/week position to a student interested in gaining experience in all facets of small special library management. The duration of the internship is 3 to 4 months. The internship is immediately available and non-remunerated. Applicants are invited to express their interest via email.

Please note that the internship involves 8 or 16 hours spread over the week between the hours of 9-5 Monday-Friday. No weekends.

This is a rewarding opportunity to work as a librarian in an art library. You will gain hands-on experience within the organisation and management of a library, work with a wonderful (and growing) art collection (over 36.000 books, plus magazines and newspapers), and make a positive contribution to a fascinating organisation. The successful candidate will have instructional experience; strong, positive communication and interpersonal skills; the ability and willingness to handle multiple responsibilities in a changing environment; be conversant with various library trends, web development, art history, philosophy, sociology and culture.

Essential elements of position:· Process (catalogue, enter into database, shelve) new items · Provide reference services and help members locate books · Maintain catalogues and library website · Maintain and manage rare book collection and archives · Shelving materials and shelf-reading · Organising events for the library

Skills and abilities: · Flexibility in schedule · Knowledge of collection development · Excellent oral and written communication skills · Excellent computer skills, database searching, and software specific to libraries · Ability to lift and carry up to 10 kg and to climb on step stool to reach top shelves · Ability to carry books up and down a spiral staircase

Education and experience : · BA/BS or equivalent · Currently enrolled in a Library Science program or Arts & Culture or similar. The internship is immediately available and non-remunerated.
