Introducing: Daan Hovens

Since the start of 2017 I work as a PhD candidate for ITEM, supervised by Leonie Cornips and Hans Schmeets. My research project is about communication in multilingual workplaces in the Dutch-German border area (the Euroregions). This project builds upon a MA thesis for Euroculture, which I wrote back in 2012. During the 1.5 years prior to the start of my PhD project, I worked for the Dutch media organisation VPRO as a web editor and as a Japan correspondent.

Research

Generally speaking, my research is about communication in multilingual workplaces in the Dutch-German border area (the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion and the euregio rhine-meuse-north). More specifically, my aim is to observe and analyse how different people in different companies deal with language diversity in the workplace.

I am particularly interested in workplaces where one finds people from both sides of the Dutch-German border, including speakers of local dialects and minority languages. Furthermore, I am interested in working with people for whom it was not an obvious, deliberate choice to work in a multilingual environment.

Background

My PhD project builds upon a MA thesis for Euroculture, which I wrote back in 2012. I studied this double-degree programme at the Universities of Göttingen and Uppsala, while I also stayed at Osaka University for a three-month research track.

Apart from this, I studied a MA programme in Media Studies (Journalism) and a BA programme in Scandinavian Languages and Cultures (including a Minor programme in German) at the University of Groningen.

During the 1.5 years prior to the start of my PhD research, I worked as a web editor for various TV and radio programmes in the Netherlands (mainly: Buitenhof, Argos, Bureau Buitenland). During this period, I also worked as a freelance Japan correspondent for the website of the Dutch broadcasting organisation VPRO.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if you would like to share ideas. I am looking forward to meeting you all in Maastricht!
