Introducing: Katleen Gabriels

Katleen Gabriels has joined FASoS as an Assistant Professor (Philosophy). Her expertise is in the area of philosophy and ethics of technology, computer ethics, and moral philosophy. Until December 2018 she worked as an Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology.

Katleen’s PhD focused on morality in social virtual worlds and her postdoctoral research on the ethical implications of the Internet of Things (IoT). This academic year (2018-2019) she also holds the Willy Calewaert-chair, awarded by the faculty Engineering Sciences of the VUB.

Katleen holds Master’s degrees in Germanic Philology (KU Leuven) and Moral Sciences (Ghent University and university of Helsinki (Erasmus)), and a doctoral degree in Philosophy and Moral Sciences from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) (2014), where she worked as a postdoctoral researcher from 2014-2017. She was also a visiting postdoctoral researcher at the University of Vienna. Until December 2018 she worked as an Assistant Professor in the research group Philosophy & Ethics at Eindhoven University of Technology.

Katleen is an elected steering committee member of Ethicomp, an international academic organization that occupies itself with ethical computing. Her book ‘Onlife. Hoe de digitale wereld je leven bepaalt (How digitization shapes your life)’ was published (Lannoo) in 2016.
