Introducing: Maria Debre

Maria J. Debre joins the Department of Political Science as a Post-doctoral Researcher in the ERC Project “Who get’s to live forever? Towards an Institutional Theory on the Decline and Death of International Organisations” lead by Hylke Dijkstra.

Maria received her PhD from the Free University Berlin in 2018 within the Berlin Graduate School of Transnational Studies and the Research College (KFG) ‘The Transformative Power of Europe’.

She has previously studied Comparative Politics and International Relations at Passau and Potsdam University in Germany and Université Laval in Québec, Canada. During the academic year 2017/18, she was a Fox International Fellow at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University.

In her Ph.D, Maria has dealt with the impact of regional cooperation between authoritarian regimes for domestic survival politics. Apart from studying the international dimension of authoritarian resilience, Maria’s research focuses on Regional and International Organisations, Middle Eastern Politics (especially in the Gulf monarchies), as well as questions of gender and politics. She has taught courses on EU-Mediterranean relations, research design, and gender and politics at FU Berlin and Yale University, has published in Comparative Politics and zib, Journal for International Relations, and is a Member of the Scholars Strategy Network (SSN).
