Lotte Thissen interviewed on L1 regional television

Lotte Thissen was invited to talk about her PhD dissertation ‘Talking In and Out of Place: Ethnographic reflections on language, place, and (un)belonging in Limburg, the Netherlands’ during the talkshow Avondgasten on L1 (regional television). L1 also made a report of Lotte at one of her fieldwork locations in the city of Roermond.

Thissen’s dissertation “Talking In and Out of Place” addresses the question of how people, living in a constantly changing and increasingly mobile world, deal with the daily challenges of multilingualism, place-making and feelings of belonging and unbelonging. This book examines such challenges within the context of the city of Roermond in Limburg, a perceived peripheral province located in the southeastern part of the Netherlands. Three research cases demonstrate that peripheral areas, such as Limburg, should not be mistaken as being homogeneous areas where cultural and linguistic diversity are absent.
