MUSTS Colloquium: Writing about Research Ethics
Speakers: Willemine Willems and Merel Noorman

When: Wednesday 15 June 2016, 15.30-17.00
Where: Attic, Soiron building, Grote Gracht 80-82

Abstract
Recently, an increasing number of funding proposals come with the requirement to reflect about ethical aspects of the proposed research, such as informed consent procedures or managing research data which may contain sensitive personal information. Within the MUSTS group, we already have quite some experience in writing these ‘ethics sections’, and during our colloquium, we want to discuss some best practices for how we can write about ethical aspects of our research in a convincing manner. Additionally, we want to reflect upon how these considerations can shape the content of our research itself.

Two MUSTS researchers, Merel Noorman and Willemine Willems, will share some experiences and thoughts with writing about research ethics.

Merel Noorman is currently working on the MVI-NWO research project Long-term Equal Stakeholdership in the Smart City. As part of this research project, Merel and her colleagues are currently developing a research ethics plan, which they intend to submit to the ethics board.

In her PhD research, Willemine Willems interviews and observes patients and specialists in waiting rooms and during consultations. Before starting, she needed permission from the hospital’s medical ethical commission, which involved writing a protocol and designing an informed consent procedure.

During the last 15 minutes of the colloquium, we will look back upon and evaluate the last year of MUSTS colloquia and work-in-progress meetings.
