Nicholas C. Mullins Award voor FASOS PhD student Joeri Bruyninckx

Joeri Bruyninckx, PhD student at the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (Technology & Society dept.) has been awarded the Nicholas C. Mullins prize by the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) at this year’s joint 4S/EASST Conference in Copenhagen. The prize ($1000) is awarded annually for an outstanding piece of scholarship by a graduate student in the field of Science and Technology Studies (see www.4sonline.org/prizes/mullins).
Joeri received the prize for his paper “Sound Sterile: Making Scientific Field Recordings in Ornithology” which reports on his dissertation research and discusses the ways in which ornithologists appropriated sound recording as a scientific tool of investigation in their field studies. The paper has been published in 2012 as a chapter contribution to the Oxford Handbook of Sound Studies, edited by Trevor Pinch and Karin Bijsterveld.
