One week left to apply for EU workshop in Cologne: ‘The Extreme Centre’

Students of all nationalities living and studying in Germany, Europe, and the UK are invited to apply for an intensive two-day workshop on 18-19 April 2017 in Cologne, Germany, on the theme: ‘The Extreme Centre‘. The application deadline is Wednesday 15 February 2017.

What roles do the new right and the old left play in today’s politics? Where can democracy find its place in the 21st century?

If these questions resonate with your own, if you are a student concerned about today’s politics, and if you are passionate about discussing your ideas in an international and interdisciplinary environment – then this call is for you!

In connection to the PLURIVERSALE VI opening symposium The Extreme Centre, the Academy of the Arts of the World invites enthusiastic students to participate in an intensive two-day workshop on 18 and 19 April in Cologne.

Thematically linked to the symposium, the aim of the workshop will be to discuss the current situation of democracy in growing capitalism, nationalism, and online connectivity. What will happen to democracy when global capitalism becomes stronger? Is the new right a product of the crisis of capitalism? Can we still speak of left/right distinctions anyway?

Parallel to prominent critical thinkers such as Tariq Ali, Saskia Sassen, Srećko Horvat, Andreas Speit and Ágnes Heller who will panel the symposium, students will address these questions in an international group and raise their own to the panellists. Participants will be encouraged to confront the panellists’ critical insights and debate on how these may offer tools to examine the rapidly changing political landscape of today.
