Public lecture and FASoS workshop by Dr. Amitav Ghosh, on 23/24 January

On 23 January, Dr. Ghosh, gave a public lecture ‘Can the non-human speak? Other Beings in Myth, Literature and Ethnography’.

On 24 January, Dr. Ghosh visited FASoS. He first gave a talk about mobility and climate change, which as many of his writings was informed by global history and politics. Afterwards he gave a workshop ‘Storytelling in historical and contemporary migration research’.

During the lecture, Dr. Ghosh looked at some of the ways in which non-humans, e.g. trees and animals have been muted by certain classes of humans and that this has grave consequences in the Anthropocene.

He used examples from myth, history and his own ethnographic fieldwork, to also show how the non-human is and was able to speak. Valentina Mazzucato moderated.

During the workshop Dr. Ghosh shared how he writes fictional stories based on global events and politics and gave us tips and tricks. Issues that were discussed were e.g. how to find a clear storyline in the complexity of people’s lives.
