Research Assistant Diversity & Inclusivity Maastricht University

UM’s Diversity Officer is looking for a motivated Dutch speaking student with research interest in the social sciences for a project on local First Generation Students (FGS = student whose parents did not attend higher education). UM, in collaboration with Hogeschol Zuyd and local schools, set up the FSG taskforce.

The appointment is for 10h/week for a period of fourth months. If you are interested, apply before 15 October.

Why FGS?

Research has shown that this particular group is disadvantaged when it comes to career development, receives lower advice from teachers, has lower self-esteem and often lacks career perspectives. We would like to develop a plan that reduces obstacles for local FGS in order to make informed career and education choices. For writing this plan and formulating clear objectives, we need additional insights into the everyday practices at regional schools regarding talent development.

Tasks

You would be part of the interdisciplinary FGS taskforce. You would visit multiple schools in the whole of Limburg (HAVO, VWO) and observe pupils and teachers in their daily routines, talk to both groups and also the residential mentors. You will write a report on your findings.

Time and Salary

We offer an appointment via InterUM as research intern for UM (12.96/h) for 10h/week for a period of fourth months. We will of course also reimburse travel expenses for visiting schools around Limburg. Preferably, you would begin as soon as possible.

Requirements

You should

  • speak and write Dutch fluently, as you will work in local schools
  • have an interest in qualitative research (ethnography, interviewing, etc.)
  • have an interest in the subject matter of diversity management, in particular creating equal chances in university access for underrepresented groups
  • be an advanced BA student, or an MA student or recently graduated
  • be able to work independently, take initiative and feel comfortable delving into unfamiliar territories

If that sounds like a job for you, please send a short CV and letter of motivation until 15.10.2018 to Constance.sommerey@maastrichtuniversity.nl. You can also contact Constance in case you have any further questions.
