Researchers publish in Economisch Statististische Berichten

FASoS researchers Floris Peters, Maarten Vink and Hans Schmeets publish the cover article this week in the renowned journal Economisch Statistische Berichten. The article reveals that the introduction of a more restrictive citizenship policy in the Netherlands in 2003 has discouraged migrants to naturalize.

Particularly migrants from less developed countries of origin, who benefit from citizenship acquisition the most, are affected by the more restrictive institutional conditions. The increased financial costs and integration requirements represent an obstacle to naturalization for these migrants.

Economisch Statistische Berichten is a Dutch journal in the field of economy. The journal appears fortnightly, and has done so for over a hundred years. It contains articles on scientific, economic research with a focus on policy.

Floris Peters is a PhD candidate at Maastricht University and researcher at Statistics Netherlands. Maarten Vink is Professor of Political Science and Political Sociology at the Maastricht University and part-time Professor at the European University Institute. Hans Schmeets is senior researcher at Statistics Netherlands and Professor by special appointment in Social Statistics at the Maastricht University. The published article is financed by the Maastricht Center for Citizenship, Migration and Development (MACIMIDE), Statistics Netherlands and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
