Sustainability Symposium by ICIS and the Green Office on 22 June

You are kindly invited to this year’s Sustainability Symposium on Wednesday 22 June, 15.00-18.00. The event will revolve around the topic of ‘Sustainable Education – Methods, Competencies and Assessment’. Joop de Kraker from ICIS will give the keynote speech and the Symposium will be held in a workshop setting. To register, please send a mail to l.nacke@maastrichtuniversity.nl.

The aims of the Symposium are:
1. To introduce educators and researchers with an interest in sustainability from various faculties
to each other and provide a platform for discussion, networking and knowledge exchange.
2. To tackle challenges and discover opportunities that are connected with organizing a
sustainability-related course at a faculty with a different overall focus (Law, Political and Social
Sciences, Business and Economics, Health Sciences and Psychology).
3. To start a resource repository for course coordinators, tutors and study directors with the
results of the Symposium.

Some questions that arise are:
What are key sustainability competencies that we want to foster in students? Which methods work
best in transferring these competencies? How are they best assessed? How can we empower teachers
to develop their teaching further within certain structures? Do formal regulations and requirements
limit opportunities for “teaching sustainably”?

Joop de Kraker from ICIS will give a keynote speech focusing on certain of these aspects. Further, the
Symposium will be held in a workshop setting, giving you the opportunity to discuss and brainstorm
with your colleagues and to focus on the issues that are of greatest relevance to you. Our aim is to start
a resource repository for course coordinators, tutors and study directors with the results of the
Symposium. The repository will be a resource that other staff members can add to, that can be revisited,
and that they can use as a guideline.

We would very much like to welcome you at the Symposium, which is part of the Knowledge Exchange
Platform maintained jointly by ICIS and the Green Office Maastricht. We welcome input from all members of staff (ranging from PhD students to professors ).
