The making of Europe’s critical infrastructure

Anique Hommels has co-edited a new book published by global academic publisher Palgrave Macmillan. Hommels co-authored one chapter with Eefje Cleophas, while Vincent Lagendijk co-authored another. The book examines the expansion of European infrastructures, both through interconnections across national borders and between different types of infrastructures. It is the result of a research project involving 18 members from seven European countries.

Just before 2013 ended, Palgrave Macmillan published a volume co-edited by Anique Hommels. She also co-authored a chapter with Eefje Cleophas, and Vincent Lagendijk (History Department) is the co-author of another chapter.

The volume examines the expansion of European infrastructures, both through the interconnection across national borders and through interconnections of different kinds of infrastructures. Those connections created new forms of interdependencies and shared vulnerabilities among nations in Europe. The book shows how various actors have interpreted such interdependencies and vulnerabilities, and developed institutions for handling them.

The volume consists of three parts (‘Connecting a Continent’, ‘Negotiating Neighbours’, and ‘Coping with Complexity’), and has ten chapters in total. This includes an introduction and a reflective concluding chapter
The book is the tangible outcome of a Collaborative Research Project (CRP) within the EUROCORES programme Inventing Europe, funded through the European Science Foundation (ESF). The group consisted of 18 members from 7 different European countries. For more information on the project, see www.eurocrit.eu.
