Andrew Feenberg at FASoS on 20 April

On Wednesday 20 April, Andrew Feenberg, who holds the Canada Research Chair in the Philosophy of Technology at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, will visit FASoS for a special one-day symposium of presentations and discussions. To register or receive more information, please contact Darryl Cressman.

Drawing from STS, Critical Theory (Marcuse, Lukács), and Continental Philosophy (Heidegger, Foucault), Dr. Feenberg’s philosophy of technology addresses questions concerning power and the democratization of technology, how different values influence the design and meaning of technology, and the role of technology in theories of modernity and rationalization.

Reflecting the many dimensions of Dr. Feenberg’s work, the symposium will be organized so that a number of themes will be discussed, including: the philosophy of technical design, methodological and conceptual issues in the study of technology and society, and the relationship between power, politics, and big data.

For this symposium, Dr. Feenberg will deliver a talk entitled The Critical Theory of Technology and STS, which will be followed by a discussion with Prof. dr. Sally Wyatt (Maastricht) and Prof. dr. Wiebe Bijker (Maastricht). Following this, the schedule of presentations is as follows:

  • Dr. Pieter Vermaas (TU Delft) – Introducing Design for Values: Re-introducing some old Problems
  • Prof. dr. Hans Radder (VU Amsterdam) – Technological Systems & Genuine Public Interests
  • Mithun Bantwal Rao (Wageningen) – Philosophy of Technology Beyond the Empirical Turn
  • Dr. Tamar Sharon (Maastricht) – The Googlization of Medical Research: Research Ethics, Privacy, Power
  • Dr. Robert Prey (Groningen) – The Datafication of Listening
