Anna Herranz-Surrallés new programme director RMES

The Faculty Board has appointed Anna Herranz-Surrallés as the new Programme Director of the Research Master European Studies (RMES). She will succeed current Programme Director Giselle Bosse on 1 September 2020.

Anna is “looking forward to starting this new role. It is an honour to be entrusted with such a special programme: a two-year research-based MSc, multi-disciplinary, with a strong emphasis on methodological training, and geared to prepare the next generations of academic researchers and top-edge analysts in European Studies.

Looking at the world around us, there is no shortage of demand for such research-based expertise, and the three thematic specialisations of the RMES could not be timelier: ‘Histories of European Integration’, at a moment of resurgence of identity and memory politics in Europe; ‘Democracy & Representation’, the core pillar from which to rethink EU governance in (post)pandemic times; and ‘EU and the World’, in a context of a profound restructuration of global politics. Such challenges will require that we continue to think of how best to equip the RMES students to become modern social scientists, being up to date with the latest methodological trends (e.g. big data and new software packages), but without losing sight of substantive knowledge and critical reflection.

I am very grateful to Giselle Bosse and the RMES’ community for upholding the excellency of this programme, recognised year after year with the prestigious ‘Top Rated Programme’ label of Keuzegids Masters. I look forward to continuing this effort, working towards the successful re-accreditation of the RMES in 2021, and together with colleagues and students, defining its future development”.
