Maastricht is a leading Centre of Excellence for multi-disciplinary Europe-focused research with societal impact. Academic knowledge is made widely accessible with special attention to citizen science.

European integration and the role of Europe in the world form a key research theme at Maastricht University (UM). UM has developed major interdisciplinary research programmes in these domains with a particular focus on: the position of the European Union (EU) in world affairs; the functioning of the EU (in particular its institutional organisation and substantive norms); the character of the EU as a policy-making body; its relationship with its Member States (and their different layers of government and society).

Ongoing crises such as migration, climate change, Brexit or the more recent COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the rise of chauvinist and nationalist movements, plus rapid technological developments have confronted the EU and its member states with existential questions that need urgent and innovative answers. Existing theories, which were largely developed in the heyday of integration, are not up to the task of analysing the EU’s day-to-day politics and policies, not to mention its haphazard approach to crisis management. These processes have turned out to be far more multi-layered than anticipated; involving multiple institutions, levels of government, policies and identities.

With the Strategic Research Agenda that is led by Studio Europa Maastricht (SEM), Maastricht University heeds the urgent need to renew and expand UM’s research agenda on European integration, the EU and Europe more generally; and to do this through innovative multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research collaborations.

The research scheme contains seven calls and aims to encourage multidisciplinary research, larger grant applications, publication of scholarly papers and the establishment of strategic research. With these calls SEM aim to promote innovative and high academic quality research, interdisciplinary in nature with societal relevance and a citizen science and/or outreach component, by offering teams of UM-researchers ‘seed funding’ opportunities.

SEM looks forward to incorporating your research into our aim to position Maastricht, the capital of Limburg, as a meeting place for citizen dialogue and debate and establish a centre of excellence for research on Europe and European integration.
