Asbestos removal Grote Gracht 76

During a periodic inspection at Grote Gracht 76 for asbestos risks, a minor contamination was found above the suspended ceilings at the following places: the main entrance, the men’s bathroom on the ground floor, room 0.16 and the staircase to the first floor. Further analysis has revealed that these contaminants do not pose any health risks. Following the results of the inspection, preventive work will take place at Grote Gracht 76 from Monday 16 February until Friday 20 February.

Implementation of the work:
The contamination will be cleared. In addition, the remaining asbestos will be further isolated and marked in order to avoid any damage and/or prevent contamination in the future. After the works have been conducted the building will be safe for use again (as it currently is).

All university buildings are periodically inspected for asbestos and any possible risks related to asbestos. At Grote Gracht 76, as in 70% of all buildings in the Netherlands, asbestos was used and is still present. Maastricht University will keep monitoring and checking the known asbestos sources.

Implications for staff/students:
During the maintenance works the following areas at Grote Gracht 76 cannot be used: the main entrance, the hallway at the ground floor near the staircase, the staircase and rooms 0.15 and 0.16. The building can be accessed via the back entrance (next to the carpark). The second floor is only accessible via the metal (fire) staircase on the outside of the building.

The workers will wear protective clothing during the process, as they are exposed to hazardous substances on a daily bases. Employees can use the building safely during the works, as the affected area is completely protected. There is the possibility of some noise nuisance as a result of the use of machines.

The employees who have an office at Grote Gracht 76 will be contacted by Vincent Cordewener to go over some practical matters (such as the possibility to temporarily move to a different office if your office is not reachable).

After the contamination has been removed, the affected areas will get new ceilings and light fixtures.
