Brigitte Le Normand launches “Rijeka Fiume in Flux” mobile phone app

Brigitte Le Normand and her team launched the “Rijeka Fiume in Flux” app on 18 June, which allows users to explore the multilayered history of the city of Rijeka, Croatia.

The research was funded by the Social Science and Humanities Council of Canada. The launch was covered by the city’s main newspapers, Novi List and La Voce del Popolo, Rijeka Danas, and Rijeka.hr. Brigitte was also interviewed on community Radio Roža.

The project brought together historians, architectural historians, geographers, programmers, and digital humanists from across Canada and Europe.

The app aims to empower users to set aside entrenched narratives about the past in order to explore different possible narratives. Users can choose from curated tours, they can follow their interests, or they can allow their wanderings through the urban space to determine their experience. The app starts from the premise that you understand the past differently when you blend narration with bodily experiences.
