Call for participation: Digital Society conference on 15 November

After years of planning, the BA Digital Society has welcomed its first students, about 75 from 20 different countries, with an equal balance of women and men. To mark this important event in the life of FASoS, there will be a festive launch on Thursday 14 November and a research conference on Friday 15 November.

Read below for more details on how to participate.

Three fascinating speakers will join our conference. Dr Astrid Mager from the Austrian Institute of Technology Assessment, Dr Nishant Shah from ArtEZ University of the Arts and Leuphana University, and Dr Jack Stilgoe from University College London.

The BA Digital Society raises important research questions concerning the impact of digitalisation on society, culture and politics. These cut across FASoS research themes and institutes which each bring together interdisciplinary perspectives. Humanities and social sciences are crucial for the development of a digital society that benefits all.

You – FASoS colleagues – are invited to present your own research – ongoing, planned, and dreams for the future. These might include substantive research questions about cyberpunk fiction, expectations of smart cities, new global digital divides, regulation of hate speech, or anything else. Presentations about what digital tools and methods could mean for your own research practices are also encouraged.

Presentations are expected to be short (exact timings will be announced after we know how many people wish to participate) to enable extensive discussion. The goal is to explore interdisciplinary challenges and opportunities, in terms of topics and methods, for future work across all four FASoS research programmes.

If you would like to make a presentation, please send Sally Wyatt the following: name of presenter(s), a title, and a 250 word abstract by 14 October.

On 14 November, from 16.00 until 19.00, there will be a celebratory event for a wider audience, including the new students, UM colleagues, and regional and national stakeholders. It will feature video artist Geert Mul and a panel discussion with Valerie Frissen, SIDN Fonds/Leiden University; Laury van den Ham, Province of Limburg; Franciska Grommé, TNO Research; and Rudolf Müller, Business Intelligence and Smart Services Institute (BISS). Further details will follow, but mark the time and date!

Details of how to register for both events will be announced soon. For now, send Sally your ideas about what you would like to present on Friday 15 November.
