Call for Papers: Sociolinguistics Circle 2018

The Sociolinguistics Circle is an annual one-day conference aiming to bring together students and researchers of language variation, sociolinguistics and social dynamics of language with a connection to the Low Countries. The upcoming, fifth edition will take place at Maastricht University, on Friday 6 April 2018. For this edition, we also invite BA and MA students to submit their work for (poster) presentation.

FASoS to host 5th Sociolinguistics Circle in April 2018

The first Sociolinguistics Circle was hosted by the University of Groningen in March 2014. The next edition will be hosted by the chair ‘Language culture in Limburg’ of Maastricht University at FASoS and will take place on Friday 6 April 2018. For this fifth edition, bachelor’s and master’s students are also invited to submit their work for (poster) presentations.

Essay competition on the most important scientific breakthrough

The KHMW (Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen) and the Dutch newspaper NRC announce their eighth essay competition. The theme of this year is ‘What will be the most important scientific breakthrough in the 21st century?’. Submit your essay before 15 June. More information can be found online.

Mosaïek magazine is calling for freelance writers and artists among our staff and students. Mosaiek is an independent, non-profit magazine, exclusively run by FASoS students, which encourages expression in relation to humanities and social sciences. ESST European Award 2017 for best undergraduate essay

The European Masters Programme in Society, Science and Technology (ESST) is sponsoring an award of €500 for the best undergraduate essay on the connection between science and society (or technology and society). Open Call for Workshop on the Future of Politics in Times of Populism

What roles do the new right and the old left play in today’s politics? Where can democracy find its place in the 21st century? Alongside Tariq Ali, Saskia Sassen, Srećko Horvat, Andreas Speit, Chantal Mouffe and Ágnes Heller, students will address these questions during the symposium ‘The Extreme Centre’, organised by the Academy of the Arts of the World in Cologne on 18-19 April 2017. Call for Papers: MACCH Conference Participatory Practices

The Maastricht Centre for Arts and Culture, Conservation and Heritage (MACCH) is pleased to announce the upcoming conference: ‘Participatory Practices in Arts and Heritage’ on 17-18 March 2017. The deadline for abstracts is Monday 16 January 2017. This event is a collaboration between MACCH, the research centre Autonomy and the Public Sphere in the Arts, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and the Jan van Eyck Academie.
