Poetry, picture and art contest continues

On 21 March, the Polish poet Adam Zagajewski passed away, having only a few days before taken part in the Scottish International Poetry Festival online.

Below you can find his poem ‘Transformation’ to inspire you. The poem simply begins ‘I haven’t written a single poem / in months’…..which explores what he has been doing instead. Perhaps you can use that same line as an opening and write your own poem in response. What have you been doing the last few weeks when you haven’t been writing a poem, or essay, or thesis?

In the meantime, have a look at this beautiful painting made by Sarah Anschütz on her iPad. You can still send in your your art, photos, poems and short fiction (both staff and students!) to Sally (sally.wyatt@maastrichtuniversity.nl).

This week’s poem by Lea Beiermann (History Department) reminded me of what Sir Philip Sydney (English poet, 1554-1586) said about the purpose of poetry, ‘to instruct and to delight’. Lea conjures up the power of language and words, and reminds us of the importance of learning, of embodiment and of nature.

As we mark the one-year anniversary of the first lockdown in the Netherlands, let’s remember some of the suggestions that were being made about how we could spend our time.

There were reminders that Shakespeare wrote ‘King Lear’ and ‘MacBeth’ during an outbreak of the bubonic plague at the beginning of the 17th century. It was also suggested (wrongly) that Newton made some of his breakthroughs in calculus later that century during another outbreak of the plague.

We’ve all noticed – in the past year, colleagues are sometimes busy with other things. Often it is email, sometimes it is children, other people or pets.

Veerle Spronck and Denise Petzold were recently spotted knitting during a research presentation. Read further for the poem they wrote about how knitting supports listening, and for photographic evidence of this novel practice.

Keep sending your contributions to sally.wyatt@maastrichtuniversity.nl.

Do you ever have trouble sleeping? Some people have spoken of how they have been dreaming more intensely the last few months, or else waking up during the night and not able to get back to sleep.

Earlier this week British poet Ruth Padel, great-great-granddaughter of the naturalist and biologist Charles Darwin, published a poem called ‘Night singing in a time of plague‘. It begins as follows:
