On the eve of the celebrations of 25 years Treaty of Maastricht, the First Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, returns to his birthplace to engage in an open conversation, looking back, but above all looking ahead together with the audience.

8 December 2016 from 20.00 until 21.15, doors open at 19.30. La Bonbonnière (Achter de Comedie 1, 6211 GZ Maastricht). Please register. A livestream will be available as well.

Exactly 25 years ago in Maastricht, a new Europe was born with a common currency and with the ambition to work on a common European policy in a number of areas, such as foreign- and security policy, social policy and some areas of justice and home affairs. Today, Europe finds itself at a crossroads, in a perfect storm of several great challenges, such as the refugee crisis, terrorism and an approaching Brexit.

On the eve of the celebrations of 25 years Treaty of Maastricht, the First Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, returns to his birthplace to engage in an open conversation, looking back, but above all looking ahead together with the audience. Which direction do we want to take? What is the purpose of borders and what are the dangers of walls? Why are solidarity, inclusion and trust so important and how are we going to achieve them together?

The language of the event is Dutch, with simultaneous interpretation into English.

This event is one of a series of dialogues that the Commission is organising in all countries of the Union. The events give the general public an opportunity to discuss directly with European politicians about the kind of Europe they want to live in and their expectations for the future.
