Meet Auntie Kate.

‘Kate Bornstein is a Queer & Pleasant Danger’ is an intimate portrait of a trailblazing artist-theorist-activist. Directed by New York based filmmaker Sam Feder, the film engages with Kate’s personal and public persona, which has won the hearts of people worldwide and alienated others. The film explores Kate’s artistic practice, her influences and the way she has created language, space, and permission for generations of people to live their lives. It looks at Kate’s life journey as a shape shifter, gender theorist, and means of surviving great depression while engaging the nature of art, community, being queer and transgender.

Increasingly, films narrate the personal lives and transitions of transgender people. “Kate Bornstein is a Queer and Pleasant Danger” moves the genre forward and focuses on Kate’s pioneering work as a gender outlaw who inhabits a multiplicity of sometimes contradictory identities with unwavering wit, style and candor. As she receives a grim cancer diagnosis, Kate confronts her own mortality and seeks new answers to the age-old question: What makes life worth living?

This film screening is co-organized by the Centre for Gender and Diversity, Transgender Limburg, Queer Creatures (Mandril Cultural Centre) and Universalis, Society of Feminism.
