ERC kickoff-workshop “Decline and Death of IOs”, 9 and 10 January 2020

On Thursday 9 January and Friday 10 January 2020, the NestIOr project organises its kick-off workshop on “Decline and Death of International Organisations” at UM Brussels Campus (Avenue de Tervueren 153, 1150 Brussels), assembling internationally renowned scholars working the topic.

You can find the programme of the days here.

Registration is required. To attend, please contact Maria Debre (

Many international organisations (IOs) are currently under significant pressure resulting in the loss of competences, resources and even member states. The ultimate way for states to show their discontent is to disband IOs: no less than a third of the IOs, created between 1815 and 2015, has formally ceased to exist. While academics have analysed how IOs are designed and developed, we know little about their decline and death.

This workshop — funded by the ERC project NestIOr – brings together scholars with an interest in the decline and death of international organisations. Both decline and death are broadly conceptualised and include member state withdrawals, budget cuts, continuous underperformance, formal dissolution, as well as the transformation of international organisations. The purpose of the workshop is to discuss papers by participants, but also to comment on the research design of the ERC project, and further develop a scholarly network around the decline and death of international organisations.

Further information on the project can be found here. If you’re interested in attending, please write an email to Maria Debre ( to register.
