The last film completed by Orson Welles was the stylish pseudo-documentary, F for Fake, a film magician’s marvellous meditation on his art, on creation and fakery, and on reality and illusion. The film will be screened on Tuesday 15 March, 19.30 at Lumière Cinema Maastricht, Bogaardenstraat 40b. Ticket: Students €4, others €6. Reservations: www.lumiere.nl. English subtitles.
Welles’s masterful sleight-of-hand takes in noted art forger Elmyr de Hory’s counterfeit Picassos, Clifford Irving’s hoax biography of Howard Hughes, Welles’s own “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast, and much else besides.
Juxtaposing the real life narratives of these “fakes” with fictional montages featuring Welles, F for Fake is a devious exploration that begs the audience to ask: what is actually real here?
The screening is followed by a debate led by René Hoppenbrouwers MA, director of Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL) and Kate Seymour MA. The screening is part of the “Fake It or Leave It” film series, in cooperation with The Maastricht Centre for Arts and Culture, Conservation and Heritage.
