Film screening: The World According to Monsanto, on 3 June

On Friday 3 June at 16.00, the 2008 documentary ‘The World According to Monsanto‘ will be screened at FASoS. The film will be introduced by PhD candidate Andreas Mitzschke, who studies the public debate about the risks of genetically modified crops. The event is free of charge. Please register via email.

The Multinational Corporation Monsanto is known for being a powerful player in the global market for agricultural inputs such as genetically modified seeds and pesticides. It has been criticized by civil society for monopolizing markets, bribing governments, and manipulating science.

The World According to Monsanto is a 2008 documentary by the French journalist Marie-Monique Robin, who follows Monsanto from its headquarters in the United States around the world to Canada, Mexico, Paraguay, Europe, and India. Resulting from three years of research, Robin presents an intriguing picture of the multinational corporation and its activities illustrated by voices that remain unheard of in mainstream media.

Picking up on recent news on a possible fusion of agricultural multinationals, this film screening will be accompanied by a short talk given by Andreas Mitzschke, PhD candidate at Maastricht University Science and Technology Studies (MUSTS), who writes his dissertation on the public debates about the risks of genetically modified crops. Mitzschke will broaden the picture about Monsanto with the aim to contextualize the issues presented in the documentary.

The event will take place at FASoS on June 3rd and is free of charge. The exact venue will be announced upon registration via email to: andreas.mitzschke@maastrichtuniversity.nl
