No place stands for rewritten histories and the struggles of Polish identity like Katyn. Here in 1940, 22.000 Polish prisoners of war were executed on Stalin’s orders. That is the truth, a truth that was long suppressed in Poland. With his film award-winning director Andrzej Wajda tells the story of the thousands of victims – amongst them his own father – and sets them a memorial. “Katyn” shows not only the horrible massacre itself, but also the way it was dealt with afterwards. Through the eyes of four families we witness how the Nazis used the massacre as propaganda against the Soviets, and how later, the Soviets suppressed the truth by claiming that the crime had been committed by the Germans. The movie itself remains rather cold, the violence realistic and sometimes hard to watch. By that the film manages to honour the victims who for so long had neither peace nor recognition.

In the context of the European project EWORDS, Aline Sierp organises a series of six films that deal with various aspects of totalitarianism in different countries and under several regimes. The films will be shown in the Turnzaal at Fasos at 19.00 every Tuesday evening between 6 November and 11 December. Entry is free.

Before the screening of the film, a Fasos faculty member will give a short introduction to the topics and context of the film, and after the screening there will be time for discussion.
