First Impact Factor for Contemporary Security Policy

The academic journal Contemporary Security Policy, hosted at FASoS and edited by Hylke Dijkstra, has received its first Impact Factor in the Social Science Citation Index. It now ranks 33 among the best 91 academic journals in the field of International Relations.

Editor-in-Chief Hylke Dijkstra notes that “Contemporary Security Policy is currently publishing its 40th volume in 2019. Inclusion in the Social Science Citation Index is an important recognition of four decades of scholarship starting in 1980. Our first impact factor of 1.574 in this year’s Journal Citation Reports, which ranks us 33 out of 91 International Relations journals, is really incredible.”

He continues that “the reality of modern academia is that journal rankings are taken seriously when it comes to academic promotion or funding applications. The Social Science Citation Index is the Champions League and this puts Contemporary Security Policy among the world’s top-5 of academic journals in the sub-field of security studies. As a result, more scholars will likely send us their very best papers.”

Getting included in the Social Science Citation Index is by no means straightforward. Only a small proportion of journals are included and the evaluation process includes a thorough examination of the quality of peer-review, the international orientation of the journal, and whether other scholars are extensively citing articles in the journal. This is the first time since 2010 that several new journals are included in the International Relations category of the Social Science Citation Index.
