Four new FASoS CPD workshops in March and April

Four new FASoS CPD workshops are now open for registration. The workshops focus on feedback (2x), the international classroom and assignment design.

Read the entire article below for more information on workshop content and on how to sign up.

Other workshops are currently being explored, one on using games in PBL and one on using online tools for interactive lectures. Keep an eye on the FASoS weekly for more information.

Feedback workshop, with John Harbord
4 March 2020, 11.00 – 13.00, GG80-82, room 0.039

Individual feedback is probably the most important variable (of those under our control) in influencing student learning success. Yet students often complain about “unhelpful”, “unclear”, and “insufficient” feedback. And we often wonder if they even read the painstaking comments we wrote. This workshop focuses on responding to student writing, particularly with regard to writing issues. We will explore the aims of formative feedback and the techniques available to maximise student learning, including hands-on discussion exercises.

Worth 2 CPD hours. Please sign up here.

International classroom workshop, with Aneta Spendzharova
1 April 2020, 11.00 – 13.00, room t.b.a.

The student body has become increasingly diverse and international, which presents new challenges for teaching staff. This is even more so within the context of PBL, where students meet and work together in small groups. During this interactive workshop, the focus will be on the do’s and don’ts of teaching in an international classroom. Participants will be invited to share their experience and discuss strategies for making the most of the exchange between students with different backgrounds.

Worth 2 CPD hours. Please sign up here.

Assignment design workshop, with Patrick Bijsmans and Mirko Reithler
6 April 2020, 15.00 – 18.00, room t.b.a.

This workshop looks at one of the most challenging aspects of PBL course development, namely assignment design. Participants will be asked to read related literature in advance and bring one of their own assignments to the workshop. After an introduction to do’s and don’ts in PBL assignment design, the workshop will take a very hands-on perspective by having participants work on improving each other’s assignments. This workshop will be particularly interesting to colleagues who are in the process of (re-)designing courses.

Worth 4 CPD hours (including required preparation). Please sign up here.

Advanced feedback workshop, with John Harbord
22 April 2020, 11.00 – 13.00, room t.b.a.

This workshop builds on John’s previous feedback workshops on 27 November and 4 March. It aims to get you to think about the aims of assessment, both summative and formative, what is to be assessed and how it can be assessed, including assessment of, for and as learning. In addition, you will experience self-assessment and consider its value for students. This workshop is open to all colleagues interested in learning more about providing students with effective feedback, but will be particularly worthwhile for (future) course coordinators.

Worth 2 CPD hours. Please sign up here.

And more to come:

  • Workshop using games in PBL;
  • Workshop using online tools for interactive lectures.
